Polar bear

Polar bear

This is the third item purchased from an auction in Nottingham in May. Again it is painted by John Brewer and relates to exploration around the artic circle.

John Brewer started working at Derby in 1795. He was the elder of two brothers who both worked at Derby. Their parents were both artists and from 1762-1767 had studios in London at Rupert Street.

This cylindrical jar came from the same auctions as the kidney shaped dish in the last post. It was probably painted by Thomas ‘Jockey’ Hill. The oval panels are painted with a Derbyshire scene and a view of Arkwright’s Mill at Cromford.Cromford Jar
